Cyber Report

A major ransomware attack has affected a large amount of organizations across the world including Telefonica in Spain, the National Health Service in the UK, and FedEx in the US. The malware responsible for this attack is a ransomware virus known as 'WannaCry'.

Analysis has shown that U.K. businesses were subjected to an average of 230,000 cyber-attacks each in 2016. The number of attacks on individual companies' firewalls breached 1,000 per day, on Average, in November last year, according to internet service provider (ISP) Beaming.

Ransomware antivirus detections increased by 36 percent compared to 2015, rising from an average of 933 per day in 2015 to 1,270 per day in 2016.

Top 5 Tips for staying protected:

1. Make safe and secure backups - Once your files are encrypted, your options are limited. Recovery from backups is one of them. Backups often are also out of date and missing critical information. With this attack, we recommend trying to recover the 'shadow volume' copies some versions of Windows have, some ransomware can also target backup files, though.

2. Update and patch your systems - The latest ransomware was successful because of a combination of factors. Those include a known and highly dangerous security hole in Microsoft Windows, users who didn't apply Microsoft's March software fix, and malware designed to spread quickly once inside university, business and government networks.

3. Use antivirus software - Using antivirus software will protect you from the most basic, well-known viruses by scanning your system against their known 'fingerprints'. Low-end criminals take advantage of less-savvy users with these viruses, even though malware is constantly changing and antivirus is frequently days behind detecting it.

4.Educate your workforce - Basic protocol such as stressing that workers shouldn't click on questionable links or open suspicious attachments can save headaches.
System administrators should ensure that employees don't have unnecessary access to parts of the network that aren't critical to their work.

5.If hit, don't 'wait and see' - Some organisations disconnect computers as a precautionary measure. Shutting down a network can prevent the continued encryption - and possible loss - of more files.
Hackers will sometimes encourage you to keep your computer on and linked to the network, but don't be fooled.
If you're facing a ransom demand and locked out of your files, law enforcement and cybersecurity experts discourage paying ransoms because it gives incentives to hackers and pays for their future attacks.

The reality is that you or your business will suffer from Cybercrime, today, tomorrow, next week. Who knows? The attack may already have happened and you could be mid-way through an attack, that you may currently know nothing about.

Don’t leave it until it’s too late. If you believe you may be infected or targeted for attack and need help, assistance or even some friendly guidance, regarding the recent Ransomware attack, contact RedDrum without any delay. - Tel: 03333 449797 | Email: Or visit: for more information.

RedDrum to the rescue

RedDrum to the rescue

RedDrum engineers have been pleased to assist a leading local food producer, whose systems had been compromised by Russian hackers. Unfortunately, some damage had already been done before RedDrum were involved. Prevention is definitely better (and much less disruptive and expensive!) than cure. See the comprehensive and free RedDrum guide to Cybercrime prevention.
